Black Midi Hats was formed in London by Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton (vocals/guitar), Matt Kelvin and Morgan Simpson (drums). They are a band that has built their reputation on a totally different model than most. They didn't have one marketing strategy. Their buzz was built by word of mouth. Their music was a form of physically dislocating poetry. It was a dizzying maelstrom technical and textual incongruities that made it feel like an adrenaline rush with no safety nets.
The music is a mixture of screeching noise and jazzy prog, as well as skittish math and sprawling post rock. It's built on dynamic, expansive trajectories. The four-piece's intense concentration is what drives their trajectories, which are reflected in their explosive energy on stage.
It's easy to see why they are quickly gaining a reputation in London. It's refreshing to find something bold and original in an era when so many artists follow trends.
Black midi is a type of music where songwriters pile hundreds of thousands upon thousands of midi (a digital notation system that triggers sound) so densely that computers have a hard time processing them. Black midi is a way to inject color into modern musical conventions, breaking every rule and creating a unique mosaic.
Black midi is back with their second album Cavalcade. This album is a story all its own: an engaging saga rich in drama and world-building. This is the closest record of their genre to theatre and it's not likely to stop anytime soon.
