Geçmişten bahsederken, varsayım yapıyor isek şu ana ya da geleceğe atıfta bulunurken, bir dilek dilerken, bir kişinin bir duruma ulaşması neticesinde ulaşacağı kadameden bahsederken "if" ile; eğer varsayım, hipotez ya da durum geçmişte kaldı ise past perfect kullanılır: It was very dangerous. What if you had got lost? | Duruma göre kibarca ifade verir iken de kullanılabilir:
I wish I hadn't spent so much money last month. | Excuse me, I was wondering if this was the train for York.
I would have helped him if he had asked. | I just hoped you would be able to help me.
