Çocukluğunda çiftçilik yaparak büyüyen Veysel, 7 yaşında çiçek hastalığına yakalanarak görme yetisini kaybetti. Bu nedenle okula gidemedi ve kendi kendine okumayı öğrendi. Babasının bağlamasıyla tanıştıktan sonra müziğe ilgi duymaya başladı ve kısa sürede bağlama çalmayı öğrendi.
Daha sonra Sivas'a giderek müzik hayatına devam eden Veysel, çeşitli yerlerde çalarak ün kazandı. İlk albümü 1953 yılında çıktı ve 20. yüzyılın en önemli Türk halk müziği sanatçılarından biri haline geldi.
Aşık Veysel'in en ünlü eserleri arasında "Uzun İnce Bir Yoldayım", "Kara Toprak", "Güzelliğin On Para Etmez", "Zahidem", "Seni Her Gördüğümde" gibi şarkılar yer almaktadır.
