Death, some people have no problem talking about it while others refuse to. Regardless of ethnicity, culture, class, education, region or religion many people simply refuse to have anything to do with the subject of death. Here are seven reasons people fear death.

My mother tried to hold on as long as she could. I told her that I would see her at the other side and not to be afraid. She did so much for me. Now it is time for her to be with my father. I read my mother her own private eulogy which she loved. She nodded and smiled. I held her hand. She squeezed my hand and she understood. She said "I lo." with all of her remaining breath. She was finally ready to die. I said good-bye and cried, and cried, and cried. She died a few days later.

It is heart wrenching to watch the fear cross a loved ones face if they have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. The tragedy is compounded, because again the little time that they have left is spent in fear of drawing their last breath.

I've personally grieved the loss of family members and dear friends; however, recently I experienced, for the first time, a slow, impending death. I watched my 91 year old Mother for months as she made her transition. I watched her body return to the fetal position, her frail skeletal frame show protruding bones and unpreventable decubitus ulcers, feeding tube challenges, and constant pain. Through it all, though, she never lost her warm smile and her tenacity to fight. I marveled at her strength and wonder if I could ever have that much fortitude. I watched her peacefully die, at home, in her sleep, just as she had said she wanted to die.

There will be variations between States and funeral Homes on the plans offered and their costs. So, investigate and ask questions. Fully understand what you want before you buy a pre-need plan. Grandma's plan was "The Simplicity Plan," offered by Stewart Enterprises Inc. There are other plans available. Simply ask your chosen local funeral Home and they will help you devise a pre-need plan that reflects you, your wishes and your budget.

Some people who understand my situation, especially those who have also experienced losing someone they love, helped me a lot. Knowing that there are also people who are in a situation like what I'm going through makes me feel better.
