It's easy and simple to be able to see this fresh attempt to revive the 'Dungeons & Dragons' franchise in the cinema totally unprepared and expecting the most disappointing. The examples of audiovisuals' past aren't all that rosy. The 2000 film was a disaster (and was then followed by several even worse TV movies) even though the series' animated era was charming and was a Great gateway to the kiddie brand, as it was an adaption of the franchise's rich mythology it wasn't a big deal.
In the course of time, we have seen a handful of games on video (some extraordinary) as well as a number of successful book series and, more importantly millions of games using the game of dice and paper that attest to its versatility and depth, and how well it its system of rules ages but the films were a thorn for 'Dungeons & Dragons which did not complete healing. However, Wizards of the Coast knew that there was something there to exploit: the temptation to shape a universe that could expand in multiple directions, in the Marvel style and was extremely strong.
The method they've used to accomplish this is to create a recognizable universe, but conscious that we're in nothing less than a non-interactive role-playing game. That is to say, casual, without excessive violence or dark moments that surprise you every few minutes and with fun without complexes as the main objective. This results in a film that is self-conscious and won't please devotees who take their fantasies too seriously. The rest of the time"Honor among thieves" is not just a satire: it works like the cannon.
The starting point is pure 'Dungeons & Dragons that will last a lifetime: a thief who has a great deal of charm (Chris Pine) and a relentless combatant (Michelle Rodriguez) are walking, with a group of thieves like them, in search of a magical artifact . However, Watch Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves goes awry and the two leaders are taken into custody. A few years later after their release from jail, they'll be required to rejoin the former band of thieves. They will be joined by new adventurers, to recover the treasure.
The beauty of the hodgepodge is in the details.
"Honor among Thieves" tries to pack in a bag (and shake vigorously until the original elements disappear) every reference it can, in search of its own identity within the mix. It does this, as in the film there are allusions, aside from the 'D&D' lore as a whole (silent fans will appreciate the many winks, the mentions of familiar monsters and characters in the story) to all sorts of fantasy movies and their the corresponding derivatives. The best of these winks, by the way, that we'll not divulge, but is significant and makes every forty-year-old squeal with joy, is not less joyful because it is to be expected.
There are, of course, elements from 'The Lord of the Rings', however 'Honor Among Thieves' goes much further and features the style of superheroes who are outcasts, a la X-Men however, within the context of medieval fantasy, we have an coliseum which snarks at the 'Gladiator' '... and above all it has the healthy humor of a classic is certain to imitate: 'The Princess Bride', from which it inherits the complex character. It is a classic adventure film as well as at the same time a commentary on the genre.
