Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games, says that Epic Games' founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says that the Epic Games store "definitely won't" restrict the sale of games that contain NFTs. Sweeney's statement follows a statement from Minecraft developer Mojang which laid out the company's stance to not allow blockchain technology or NFTs to be used in Minecraft.
One fan reached out to Sweeney via Twitter to inquire if Epic Games would adopt a similar approach to Mojang. However, Sweeney replied in the negative.
"Developers should be free to decide how to build their games, and you're free to decide whether you want to play them," he says. "I believe stores and operating system developers shouldn't interfere by forcing their opinions on others. We won't.
Sweeney's comments were reacted to by a user who inquired what the difference is between this policy and Epic Games its policy against discriminatory and hateful content. Akaf Sweeney stated that the differs due to "editorial and brand judgements" and believes that Epic decides "to draw the line at mainstream acceptable norms."
Some users on the PC gaming subreddit have taken issue with Sweeney's position, pointing out that the Epic CEO has previously spoken out strongly against NFTs. In September 2021, Sweeney publicly posted a copy of an email response in a Twitter reply that reads "We aren't touching NFTs as the entire field is caught up in a complex mixture of scams, intriguing foundations for decentralised technology, and frauds."
Now Sweeney is open about his belief that developers using the Epic Game store should have the option of pursuing such integrations if they wish, however. In a follow-up tweet that "Crypto is complicated.
