A new version of Minecraft developed for the classroom is now available in early access. Minecraft: Education Edition was released in January as part of Microsoft's acquisition MinecraftEdu which is a group that has been developing the game for teachers. The upgrade is free this summer, before a per-student pricing system is launched for the academic year. As a small thank you, Microsoft has promised existing MinecraftEdu customers a year of free access to Education Edition -- presumably it will be available after the trial for early access closes.
The Education Edition of Minecraft has certain advantages over the original version. Right off the bat, up to 30 students can study and collaborate in the same world without the need to establish an individual server using a service like Minecraft Realms. To create a more controlled experience for students, teachers can create non-player character (NPC) and provide them with URLs to access additional resources. A chalkboard item can be used to offer instructions, and students may also use a camera to take photographs of their work, resulting in an in-game portfolio.
Microsoft claims it is still working on a bunch of other features that users have asked for. Lion's Roar The new interface offers teachers a map with markers for each student as well as the ability to teleport users (should someone wander off or make a mistake), and a chat area to manage private and class-wide conversations. Minecraft has already proven itself to be a useful education tool that teaches the arts, geology, and coding -- with an official version available for schools its possibilities and its successes are bound to grow.
