It's easy and easy to get to this latest attempt to revive the 'Dungeons & Dragons series in cinemas totally unprepared and anticipating the most disappointing. The precedents in audiovisuals are not all that rosy. The 2000 film was awful (and was then followed by several more terrible TV films) however, while the animated series of the 80s was endearing and served as an excellent gateway to the kiddie franchise in the form of it was an adaption of the mythology behind the franchise it was not a huge issue.

The starting point is pure 'Dungeons & Dragons' of a lifetime: a thief of considerable charisma (Chris Pine) and a relentless warrior (Michelle Rodriguez) travel together, along with the other thieves who are like they, in search of an enchanted artifact . However, the mission is a disaster and the two leaders get arrested. After a few years after their release from jail, they'll have to reunite the old band of thieves. They is joined by new adventurers, to recover the relic.

The charm of the hodgepodge is in the details.


'Honor among thieves' plays to place in a sack (and shake vigorously until the original elements are unrecognizable) all the references it can, in search of its own personality within the mix. And it succeeds, because there are references, apart from the 'D&D' lore as a whole (silent fans will be delighted by the myriad of winksand the mentions of familiar monsters and characters in the story) to all sorts of fantasy films as well as related works. The most memorable of these winks, by the way, that we will not divulge, but is important and will make any forty-year-old howl with joy and isn't any less enjoyable because it is to be expected.

There are, of course, elements of 'The Lord Of the Rings', but "Honor Among Thieves'" is much more in that we are able to see the look of superhero outcasts a la X-Men, but within the context in medieval fantasy we get an coliseum which snarks at 'Gladiator '... and above all, we have the healthy joking of a classic that is certain to imitate The Princess Bride, from which it inherits a really complex characteristic.
