What Is Balloon Surgery?
Balloon surgery is a noninvasive procedure used to treat narrowed arteries or blockages in the veins and arteries. It uses a balloon catheter that is inserted into the blood vessel. A physician will carefully guide the balloon catheter into the blockage to release the pressure. It is possible to go through the procedure with general anesthesia or local anesthesia.
Orbera(tm) Balloon

Orbera balloon surgery is a relatively new procedure. Its effectiveness has been proven in multiple trials. This balloon was developed with large volume and weight to help prevent adverse outcomes. The balloon was introduced by Saber et al in 2017. A total of 1195 patients were analyzed to determine the safety and effectiveness of the procedure.

The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting. During the procedure, a diagnostic endoscopy will be performed to determine whether the surgery is safe for the patient. After this, the deflated balloon is inserted into the stomach through the esophagus. A syringe is then used to fill the balloon with sterile saline solution. After six months, the physician will remove the balloon. The patient will continue to follow a healthy diet and exercise program.

Although the risk of side effects is lower than with bariatric surgery, this procedure is still not without risks. In addition to side effects, patients will need to follow a diet plan for the first few months after the procedure. In addition, some foods may stick to the balloon and cause heartburn.

The ORBERA(tm) balloon system was developed to help people lose weight more efficiently. The new system is similar to other devices and has proven to be a successful treatment for obesity.
Orbera(tm) Intragastric Balloon

The Orbera Intragastric Balloon is designed to improve the function of the stomach. It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to reduce the size of the stomach and improve a person's overall health. The balloon is made of a silicone material and is placed inside the stomach. It can stay in place for up to 6 mo. However, after this time, the balloon can migrate into the bowel and cause serious complications, including intestinal blockage. During this procedure, the patient must be under anesthesia. The balloon is then removed using a double-channel endoscope.

Patients are generally able to eat normally for at least six months after the procedure. However, if a patient does not follow their physician's diet and exercise plan correctly, the balloon can cause serious side effects. In addition to these risks, patients may have to spend two to three weeks recovering from the procedure. Although some patients have experienced weight loss after having the procedure, this result is not permanent. Some patients report experiencing heartburn or difficulty swallowing after surgery.

The Orbera(tm) Intragastratic balloon has been on the market since 1991, and was the first balloon to meet the Tarpon Springs Consensus standards. Its effectiveness has been a subject of numerous published studies. Most studies showed that the device was highly effective. Its success has prompted many companies to copy the technology.
Intragastric balloon

During an intragastric balloon surgery, a thin, flexible tube is passed down the throat. A camera attached to the endoscope will help the doctor see the balloon as it fills. The procedure usually takes half an hour or less. The entire procedure can take one to two hours.

Before the procedure, patients should avoid eating and drinking for at least six hours. After the procedure, they may go home for two to three days. Patients may experience some discomfort during the initial day or two, but this will go away after a few days. Patients should take an over-the-counter pain medication to minimize any discomfort or swelling. After the balloon is removed, weight loss will slow down. Commitment to a diet and regular exercise is important to maintain a lower body weight. A dietitian will follow up with the patient once a month to monitor their progress.

Patients can lose up to 35% of excess weight over six months after the procedure. While this amount of weight loss is not considered excessive by most standards, it is slower than a gastric bypass or lap band. Also, the procedure does not cure obesity. Patients may gain some weight back if they continue to eat unhealthy foods and do not exercise regularly.

The procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure and can be performed on a day or two after the patient has undergone an evaluation. Patients are given mild sedation prior to the procedure. During the procedure, a bariatric surgeon inserts a deflated gastric balloon into the stomach through the mouth. Once inflated, the balloon expands until it is about the size of a grapefruit. The balloon remains in the stomach for six months. After the procedure, the patient may begin taking medications to help manage any discomfort or side effects.
