Amazon announces Fire TV, a games and video streaming set-top box

Amazon today announced the Fire TV, an Android-based set-top box that supports games and video streaming.
The Fire TV is available from today for US$99, and there is a $40 controller available that is required for some games, and allows users to access Amazon's GameCircle social gaming service.
Fire runs "Mojito" version 3.0 of Android-based Kindle Fire OS. Amazon claims that this will make it easier for developers to move their games and services to Fire TV.
It is equipped with a quad-core Qualcomm Krait 300 CPU at 1.7GHz 2 GB RAM and 8 GB of storage. There is also a Qualcomm Adreno 332 GPU as well as a dual-band wireless radio. Two antennas enable streaming at 1080p on 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi.
The Fire also supports HDMI and optical audio, which includes support for Dolby Digital Plus and 7.1 surround audio pass-through. It also has an Ethernet port and a USB 2.0 port.
Amazon claims that the Fire TV will not compete with gaming consoles. It is instead targeted at people who don't have a console, but who can play games on a tablet, smartphone, or another mobile device.
Games that are available on Fire TV so far include Minecraft: Pocket Edition; Asphalt 8 Airborne and an interminable racer inspired by Pixar's Monsters University.

Amazon Game Studios is also developing original games for the box, like an first-person shooter/tower defense hybrid called Sev Zero.
Amazon declared that the median cost of the Fire TV game was US$1.85. Prices start at US$0.99 and there will be games that are free to play.
2K Games and Disney, Double Fine Productions and Electronic Arts are all making games for Fire. Amazon claimed that "thousands of" games will be available at the end of the month.
The remote on the device is integrated with voice search and the Fire will let you access photos on Amazon Cloud Drive, its X-Ray service for TV and movies, and its streaming service.
A Twitch app is coming in the near future, along with other services such as Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, Hulu, MLB.TV, and the WWE Network.
Fire TV will offer Pandora, iTunes Radio, as also songs purchased on Amazon beginning in May.
Amazon currently does not ship the Fire TV to New Zealand.
