Tonic clonic seizure activity is a type of convulsion that is characterized by sudden rhythmic jerking of limbs and body. The duration of tonic clonic seizures is normally less than two minutes. However, there are also cases of tonic clonic seizures that last up to five minutes. These are called status epilepticus and require hospitalization.
Several factors can lead to tonic clonic seizures. This includes the use of anesthetic agents, which reduce blood pressure and respiratory rate. Other possible causes include sleep deprivation, which reduces the threshold for seizures.
To study the effect of APOE4 on tonic clonic seizure activity, a mouse model was generated. Seizures were defined by electroencephalography. A Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to classify the normal EEG from the abnormal. Compared with the control group, the APOE4-treated group had a higher incidence of tonic clonic seizures.
Similarly, a comparison of the incidence of tonic clonic seizures in mice carrying either APOE3 or APOE4 mutations was performed. The results of this analysis show that APOE3-mice have a similar frequency of total seizures, whereas APOE4-mice have a lower incidence of tonic clonic seizures.
In addition, correlation analyses were conducted to identify the relationship between the duration of tonic clonic seizures and the levels of IL-10, which is a cytokine associated with epileptic activity. Emfit Epilepsy Alarm Results showed that there was a negative correlation between tonic clonic seizures and IL-10. There were no other significant correlations between tonic clonic seizures and a variety of other parameters.
