You And The Merchants Of Death

Accepting death as an inevitability is easier than you may think. After all, who doesn't realize they are eventually going to die? The problem lies in fully accepting death and in being comfortable in talking about dying with those we love. Approaching the sensitive issues surrounding death with family members and loved ones can be a loving way to help everyone prepare for the eventual death of a family member.

Set aside funds for the funeral or other costs. A dedicated savings account for emergency bills is always a great idea. If the elderly person, or a grown child, could set aside a cash fund of several thousand dollars, it could be there so somebody could just write checks for the bills.

It was unusually warm for October, an Indian summer day. With his red handkerchief, Nessdahl wiped the perspiration from his face and neck, then the sweatband within his felt hat. He peered out at the work remaining. The job was bigger than he expected, yet if he kept at it he could be done before lunch. Some folks would offer him a sandwich or a glass of lemonade, but the Trandahls were not one of them. Then he remembered he had some salami in the refrigerator, and the thought of a nice sandwich made the job more bearable.


First, the baby died. That in itself is a tragedy. Mom carried the fetus for however long she carried it, and to now be faced with the grim reality that what was growing in her body is now gone, has got to be hard for her.

We knew Grandma had prearranged her funeral prior to her death. She had given us a small laminated card that said, "Simplicity Plan, at the time of my death call." That small card soon became a major blessing.



We generally characterize the Angel of death as a gruesome and ugly creature. We habitually think of him as a person of dread - someone to fear. While that makes for good theatrics and novels, that is hardly the true Angel of death. As in all illustrations like this, we must discover what the Scripture has to say concerning this particular agent of God.

Sheaf: This gathering of materials is usually made from long wheat grasses and tied together in the middle with a few flowers. This can be placed inside the casket, on top of it or set on a side table during visitations. When it is dried it symbolizes a fruitful and productive life. These are chosen mostly by friends, family or religious affiliations.

Acknowledging what you fear about death is the first step to overcome it. Talk to your friends or family about the reasons you fear death. Not only will you help yourself with your fear of death but them as well. Seek professional help if you need to. Death is a part of life, don't live your life fearing it.
