Standard Shipping Container Size is Outdated
When a retired Army Air Force Colonel retired in 1990, he chose to use a standard shipping container as his means of transporting his belongings. He chose this standard shipping container because it was the smallest container size that the United States Postal Service would accept. His original standard shipping container had been a wooden box measuring about 35 L by eight W by eighth. This was perfect for his short trips to the beach or camping with his family and friends.

Eventually, though, Colonel McLean decided that his retirement would leave him without one of the standard shipping containers that the postal service used to provide him. One day while surfing the internet, he came across an advertisement for International Caribbean Shipping, which provided two types of storage containers for the recreational traveler. see were one tonne and two tonne containers, both of which were perfect for transporting large and heavy equipment or supplies. The prices for these shipping containers were very reasonable, and they would be shipped quickly.

One of the International Caribbean Shipping containers that he saw was advertised as a twenty-eight foot wide standard shipping container size. He thought that this would be more than enough for his purposes, since he was planning to transport supplies and heavy equipment. However, upon further inspection of the container, it was revealed that this particular container size did not actually meet the needs of the man that had ordered it. It was very tall for his height and rather narrow. Further, it did not have the versatility that would fit into any other situation. When it came to placing items that he wanted to transport in the shipping containers, he found that the height was just too much.

He called International Caribbean and asked about their shipping container sizes. A rep referred him to a couple of representatives. These representatives told him that there were actually several standard shipping container sizes. The reason that they did not advertise the standard size was because they actually worked in an area that did not allow standard sizes. Therefore, they had to advertise something different, which worked out well for them since there were no competitors in the area.

The rep informed him that there were actually three different types of containers that could be used for transporting cargo. The three types were Lighterweight carriers, Heavyweight carriers, and Custom container sizes. He asked if he could purchase a standard shipping container size for his company's needs? Of course, he could. This was actually something that the company did not offer.

After he had purchased his twenty-eight-footer shipping container, he contacted someone from the company and explained to her that his company only needed transportation trailers to carry supplies and products, and did not need anything more. She was able to tell him that there were actually three different sizes of shipping containers that he could purchase. All three were specifically designed for carrying supplies and products of that weight. He was very happy that the freight company did not only recommend the heavy duty containers, but also the standard shipping container sizes.

Unfortunately, our company did not have any standard sizes of shipping containers. However, they did know that there were certain storage products that were smaller than eighteen inches on the outside, but taller than ten feet. This meant that they had to purchase special vans that had a lower roof height so that the products stacked inside would not exceed the height limit. This worked out great for us, because we could easily meet all of our storage needs with the extra space that came with our custom vans.

Today, our business does not rely on standard shipping container sizes. We use specialty vans that are capable of carrying many different products and can even store many of the items that are smaller than the standard sizes. Our vans are constantly being updated with new storage products and strategies. We hope that in the future the use of the term standard will become obsolete.
