Lena had always been a quiet girl, but lately, she found herself slipping deeper into a hole she couldn't seem to climb out of. She had been struggling with depression for months now, and every day was a battle just to get out of bed.

Her parents didn't seem to understand what she was going through. They would tell her to "just be happy" or "snap out of it," as if it were that easy. Her friends were supportive, but they didn't truly understand the depth of her pain.

Lena would often spend her afternoons at the park, sitting alone on a bench and watching the other kids play. She felt isolated and alone, like she was trapped in her own mind.

One day, as she sat on the bench, a boy approached her. He had kind eyes and a warm smile, and he sat down next to her without a word.

"Hey," he said softly. "Is it okay if I sit here with you?"

Lena nodded, surprised but grateful for the company.

They sat in silence for a few minutes, but it wasn't an uncomfortable silence. It was like they were both content just to be in each other's presence.

Eventually, the boy spoke again. "My name is Ethan," he said. "What's your name?"

"Lena," she replied quietly.

Ethan didn't pry or ask her any uncomfortable questions. He simply sat with her and listened as she talked about her day-to-day struggles. It was like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders, and for the first time in months, Lena felt like she wasn't completely alone.

Over the next few weeks, Ethan and Lena became fast friends. They would meet at the park and talk for hours, and he would always make her laugh, even on her darkest days.

As Lena got to know him better, she realized that Ethan had his own struggles too. He had lost his mother to cancer a few years ago, and he knew what it was like to feel like the world was crumbling around him.

Despite their shared pain, Ethan never made Lena feel like she was broken or damaged. He accepted her for who she was, depression and all.

For the first time in a long time, Lena felt hopeful. Maybe, just maybe, things could get better.
