How to make a backpack
A backpack is a great option to keep all your essentials close by and organized. You can make them quickly and easily, and you can add a variety of customizations.

To make a backpack custom, you will need a sewing machine as well as basic supplies. A needle and thread, scissors and marking pens are all essential. Also, you will need fabric to make the main bag and an accent piece.

To give your bag some personality, you can add decorative piping. This is a great method to make use of extra coordinating fabric.

Two long strips, each measuring 20" in length by 1" wide, can be cut using a small piece from contrasting fabric. Fold each strip in half lengthwise and sew together. As the edges of fabric will be aligned to part E of the bottom, it is important to attach these strips precisely and not wrap them around the edges. Finally, trim the ends to match the bottom and sides of part E.

Pin the pieces B and A together. Then, with the top edges aligned and the sides of the parts aligned, you will stitch down the sides and around each edge with a seam allowance of 3/8". Do not forget to pin the straps at the shoulders and corners.

Now you are ready to complete the exterior of your bag. For this you will need a machine with a zipper stitch and a thread that matches your main bag. Because it is more secure than a straight, a zigzag stitches will prevent the fabric from fraying.

The zigzag stitches will give your bag a finished appearance. They are easier than sewing in ditches or buttonholes. To hold your fabric taut while you stitch, an embroidery hoop is a good option.

Although this is more difficult with thicker backpack fabric, it is faster and easier than stitching through it using regular sewing machine thread. You should pull the thread gently so that your fabric doesn't get puckered.

After you have completed your bag, you need to put it in and check that it fits correctly. If it doesn’t, you can adjust the seams of the fabric or how the fabric has been trimmed.

Tip - If your backpack is made out of thicker material, you might need to trim it down before you can put it on. This will make the bag easier to carry and also ensure the zipper works well.
