"We are taught to be cautiously and avoid taking risks. This doesn't make sense for the job of an analyst in finance.

It's not only that women are conditioned to take care of their children and caregivers; they're also taught to be nice to people. Farsiar says that women are indoctrinated as courteous and are taught to reduce conflicts. "But in the world of finance, you need to be capable of standing up for yourself. You must be able to and willing to stand up for yourself.

Farsiar: Where are all the finance women?
Women are underrepresented in finance at the top levels. Women make up just 10% of executive-level positions according to a research study by Pew Research. There are only 11.5 percent of women sit on the top financial company boards.

This is a real-world issue for women who work in finance. This imbalance means that women are more likely than men to be promoted and more likely to leave the finance industry.

The good news is the increase in women holding senior positions is slow but steady. Farnoush Farsiar believes that this is partly due to the #womenshould campaign which has brought about a greater awareness of the absence of diversity. Farsiar states that she is certain that the #MeToo campaign also produced a profound impact. Women are beginning to recognize their voice and demand change."

Women who pursue finance face obstacles
There are many obstacles that prevent women from entering the financial world. Lack of role models for women is one of the greatest barriers to women getting into finance. Women in finance are typically the only ones in their department, which can cause feeling isolated.

Farsiar admitted that it can be intimidating to be the only female present in the room. "You are conditioned to be perfect all of the time, and that you shouldn't be able to make a mistake."

Another barrier is the old boys' club mentality that is still prevalent in the majority of financial companies. This is a belief system in which men encourage other men and women are excluded.

Farsiar admits "There's lots of truth to that." "I've witnessed this happen personally. Men will encourage their male counterparts, even when they are better equipped.

This old boys club mentality can result in sexual harassment or discrimination. Finance women are usually subject to unwelcome advances and demeaning remarks from their male counterparts.

The inability to work flexible schedules is another obstacle. Women are more likely than men to be entrusted with families responsibilities, for example, caring for children or elderly parents. They require flexible working arrangements to balance their personal and professional lives.

Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative(We-Fi) is one such initiative. It's a collaboration between World Bank Group and 14 countries. We-Fi is an investment and support program for women-led businesses in developing economies.

Farsiar stated, "This is an excellent initiative because it allows women access to resources that will aid them in starting and growing their business." It also allows them to create networks and connect with other women who are successful.

The Women in Finance Charter was another initiative that the U.K. government launched in the year 2016. Financial firms have committed to gender diversity by signing the Women in Finance Charter.

Farsiar says the Women in Finance Charter "is an incredible leap forward." "It will encourage financial institutions to work in the direction of gender diversity, and it is making a difference."
