Some folks think a Viking funeral would be a cool way to send off a loved one. This idealized grand gesture is totally influenced by films churned out by Hollywood studios.

To explain: the Jewish mentality two thousand years ago, and quite possibly still today, emphasised the importance of family, and especially valued its spread and prosperity - 'go forth and multiply'. In particular, God's blessing was directly linked to the growth of the family, and happy the man who had many offspring, and of course, importantly, many sons. Plenty sons were the clearest indicator that the family name would continue and prosper. This poor woman had suffered a compound tragedy and was doubly cursed (by God): her husband being dead, she could have no more sons, and now her only son had died, meaning that her family line was finished. Her life was as good as over. God had abandoned her - total disaster, with no hope of any resolution.

Every industry has their leaders. In the funeral home market there are a handful of very successful private firms that serve 1,500 to 2,000 or more families every year and operate a highly respected and profitable business.


I've personally grieved the loss of family members and dear friends; however, recently I experienced, for the first time, a slow, impending death. I watched my 91 year old Mother for months as she made her transition. I watched her body return to the fetal position, her frail skeletal frame show protruding bones and unpreventable decubitus ulcers, feeding tube challenges, and constant pain. Through it all, though, she never lost her warm smile and her tenacity to fight. I marveled at her strength and wonder if I could ever have that much fortitude. I watched her peacefully die, at home, in her sleep, just as she had said she wanted to die.



Mourners will be given the website address, a user id and password. Once they log on, they'll have the ability to view the funeral webcast live, streamed over the internet. But, that's not all. Should they not be available at the time of the actual funeral, they can still view the funeral webcast later.

Talking about death with loved ones may seem difficult at first, but it brings a sense of relief and comfort, and is much easier to do once you get started. You don't have to worry about bringing the subject up since most people will willingly talk about death, and they'll be glad you mentioned it!

Since we don't know whether our own demise will be lengthy or sudden, let's think about the peace that we want our loved ones to be left with. Let us love more each day. Let us pay it forward at every opportunity. Let us take more time for family and friends. Let us see more positive than negative in people and in situations. Let us put down the cell phone for a moment to appreciate what we see and hear. Death is inevitable, but the peace we leave is eternal.
