How many women are in finance?

In the U.S., 57% are women, but they hold only 24% of financial posts. The projected growth in women's participation is 28 percent over the next 10 years, rising from 24% by 2021. This is still far short of the parity.

The lack of diversity isn't only a problem for women. Farnoush Farsiar thinks it's a problem that affects the economy. Farsiar stated that leadership teams with diverse perspectives are more effective than those with fewer viewpoints. "So it's not just crucial to have women represented in these positions however, it is essential for the nation as a whole."

There are many theories as to why women aren't more represented in the financial sector. The most popular theory is that the finance industry is too male-dominated and competitive to permit women to enter the field. A different theory suggests that parents and peers discourage women from pursuing financial careers.

Farsiar believes the root issue lies in the ways women are socialized in their youth. "Women are taught at a young age that they must be risk-takers and not caretakers. "We are taught to be safe and not take chances. That's not the best approach to pursue an investment career.

It's not enough for women to be socialized as caretakers. They're also viewed as people-pleasers. Farsiar states that women are taught to be polite and avoid conflict. "But in the field of finance it is essential to be capable of standing up for yourself. You must be able advocate for your personal ideas."

Farsiar asks , where are all the women working in finance?
The dearth of women working in finance is especially pronounced at the top levels of the business. A study conducted by Pew research discovered that women comprise just 10% of the executive roles. Just 11.5 percent of the boards in financial institutions are occupied by women.

This inequality has real-world effects on women who work in finance. Females are more likely to be employed in finance to be promoted than their male counterparts.

The good news? Women are slowly, but surely getting older. Farnoush Farsiar believes part of this rise in women's senior roles is due to the #womenshould campaign which raised awareness of the need for diversity. There are obstacles for women pursuing finance.
Many obstacles hinder women from pursuing finance careers. One of the main obstacles is the lack of role models. Financial women are often the only ones in their respective departments, which could result in isolation.

Another issue is the boys' club mentality, that persists in the majority of financial companies. This is the belief men are more favourable to other men, and women are not considered.

Farsiar admits that "there's a lot more truth to that," he says. "I've observed this in person. Men will be able to promote men regardless of whether women are more skilled."

Lack of flexibility in working hours is another issue. Females are more likely to be responsible for family obligations than men for example, taking care of elderly parents or their children. Women need flexible work arrangements in order to balance work and family.

One such initiative is Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (WeFi), which is a collaboration between the World Bank Group & 14 governments. Farnoush Farsiar We-Fi is an initiative to provide financing and support for women-led businesses in developing economies.

Farsiar explained, "This initiative is great because it provides women with access to the tools they require in order to start and grow businesses." It also helps them to establish networks and connect with other successful women.

Another initiative is the Women in Finance Charter, which the U.K. government launched in the year 2016. The Women in Finance Charter is designed to promote gender diversity by financial institutions.

"The Women in Finance Charter is a great step forward," Farsiar encourages. It encourages financial firms as well as other companies to tackle gender diversity.

Women are now able to enter senior positions through initiatives like We-Fi as well as Women in Finance Charter. This is great news for women and the financial sector.
