Every 2-7 years, an El Nino event triggers a strong decrease in phytoplankton productivity off Peru. This triggers profound changes in the marine ecosystem that are difficult to predict or mitigate, even under optimal conditions.
During EN events the ocean's thermocline and nutricline deepen signifi cantly. In addition, mesoscale turbulence increases during extreme EN events.
We used a three-dimensional, eddy-resolving, coupled physical-biogeochemical regional model to study the impact of EN on phytoplankton biomass off Peru (Figure 1). 마추자 꽁머니 Results suggest that several characteristics of EN are reproducible within a model. These include a temperature and sea level increase, a thermocline/nutricline deepening, and a phytoplankton (mainly diatoms) and nutrient concentration decrease along the Peruvian coast.
The model was able to simulate a number of other EN-related processes: wind stress increase, upwelling reduction, ZNO3 and ZT depth reduction, surface chlorophyll (Chl) increase and nitrate vertical eddy flux increase. This is a good indication that nitrate vertical eddy flux was an important driver of the biogeochemical changes observed during EN.
Another interesting feature of the model is the ability to reproduce the occurrence of downwelling CTW, which is important for transport and subduction of nutrients across the Equatorial Pacific. The model also simulated the role of a shoreward geostrophic near-surface current to compensate for upwelling, and nitrate vertical eddy flow to enhance nitrate delivery during the CTW.
Despite the success of the model, it is not the only tool for studying these complex and dynamical oceanographic processes. In fact, satellite and in situ observations are necessary to identify and assess the effects of these oceanographic processes.
