A$AP Rocky Is Building Blocks For 2016
A$AP Rocky has been rapping since nine years old, but it wasn't until his breakthrough single "Problems" came out in 2013 that he became an overnight superstar. As a teenager, he struggled with poverty and drugs, but over the years, he has been able to overcome his problems by making a living from rap. He has also starred in films such as Dope and modelled for Salvatore Ferragamo's spring/summer 2015 campaign, all while building his own label, ASAP Worldwide.

In recent times, A$AP Rocky has been taking a more avant-garde approach to rap. In a way, this is a reflection of his own growing up.

Often referred to as a "pizzazz" artist, ASAP Rocky has been taking rap trends and fusing them into something new. He has embraced cloud rap, Odd Future's lo-fi aesthetic and even Skrillex beats, but his greatest gift is that he always finds ways to twist these things at will.

This year, rap has been filled with artists who are blending genres and experimenting with sounds to great effect. Chicago's own Towkio, Rae Sremmurd and Mike WiLL Made-It have all made impressive albums that show they're serious about being in a class of their own.

As the year comes to a close, A$AP Rocky's newest solo album, Testing, is ready to take its place among the rap elite. It features some of the best productions of Rocky's career, including those from producers such as Danger Mouse and Hector Delgado.

The music itself is more rock-influenced than it's ever been, and some of the samples are quite unexpected for a hip-hop record. Despite this, it's still one of the most exciting records of the year, and a big leap forward for the Harlem rapper.

Psychedelic, Warped and Needling Songs
Across the album, unsettling warped voices and needling whispers intermingle to create a woozy effect that's reminiscent of drug-heightened sensuality. asaprockymerch that feel. Throughout the album, Rocky's musical references broaden into the world of rock, and he takes influence from singer-songwriters like Joe Fox (whose CDs he bought on the street) and Yeezy.

There's a hint of introspection to the record, too. The opening track, "Frankenstein," has been floating around for a while now, since the late fashion trailblazer Virgil Abloh played it at Melt Festival in 2019.

While the song's message of "no rules" and a life beyond the streets is clearly intended as an antidote to the desperation he faced as a child, it also speaks to Rocky's innate ability to transcend the trappings of street culture.

He might have a grizzly exterior, but this guy has an infectious energy that radiates from within. He's a man who doesn't rely on his physical strength to get him through the day, but rather on his ingenuity and determination to succeed.

It's this mentality that has helped him navigate the pitfalls of his childhood, and it's also what has allowed him to make such a bold jump in his career. The aforementioned breakthrough song "Problems" was the product of his ability to conjure up an authentic voice and create an identity that matched it.
