The left-back admitted his first trip to Tallaght was an eye-opener into top-level football.
But, since then, Kevin Doherty’s side have beaten the Hoops at home and earned a point from Dublin 24, with Weir both scoring and being sent off in the latter.
And that means there should be no inferiority complex when Stephen Bradley’s side come to town, despite their confidence being high on the back of qualification for the group stages of the Europa Conference League.
Weir told SunSport: “Rovers away, the first time we played them, was a very tough game
“We didn’t play badly but we were not at our best and they beat us 3-1 and you could see the quality they had.
“We know more about them now, we’re more glued together as a team, we’ve gelled and we’ve obviously done well against them since.”
Weir — who counts Bohemians’ Ali Coote as his toughest opponent to date — admitted that it has been a significant step up to the Premier Division.
He said: “The tempo is a lot quicker, a lot of the players you are coming up against have been over in academies in England and know the game really well.”
But Weir, 20, had shown enough to be offered a professional contract by Drogheda in July which he had no hesitation in signing.
He ultimately has ambitions to be a full-time footballer but, for now, he is combining his career with learning a trade.
He said: “It can be tough, you’re starting work at 8am and going straight to training so they’re long days but it’s good to be doing something.”
The Ratoath native had been going down a different road, starting a business degree as part of a soccer scholarship at UCD where he was a key member of the side which went on to win promotion after his departure.
But Weir — who played his schoolboy football for Home Farm, St Joseph’s Boys and Belvedere — said: “It just wasn’t for me, the classrooms and staying in dorms.
“UCD is a great club for young players in terms of facilities and giving them opportunities but I know I made the right decision and wish I had made it earlier.”
That meant a brief stint out of the League of Ireland, during which he lined out for Maynooth University Town, before being signed by Doherty.
He said: “As soon as Kev rang me, it was an easy decision.
“I was looking to get back into the league and I had a few friends who played for the Under-19s so I knew what a good club it was.”
His emergence has meant that the departure of Conor Kane to Shelbourne has not been as sorely felt as it might have been.
Seán Roughan’s arrival on loan from Lincoln City meant he had to bide his time at the start and his bid to establish himself in the side was not helped by a sending-off against Sligo Rovers.
Having been 2-0 down, Drogheda battled back to level after the break but Weir picked up a second yellow card before his team-mates succumbed to a last-gasp Garry Buckley goal.
He said: “I didn’t even want to leave my room, to let the team down like that, but I’ve copped on since then. I talked through it with the experienced lads like Gary Deegan, Ryan Brennan and Dane Massey, who let me know what I could do and how to improve.”
There was that second red in Tallaght but there has been far more good than bad, with his goal that day his fourth of the season.
He said: “Ever since I’ve been young, I’ve played left-back, it’s always been my position but I love getting forward, whether it’s assisting or scoring goals.”
Two of those four goals have come against Rovers and he would dearly love a third today but is expecting a tough test.
He said: “I know they have had European matches but they’ll be fully focused on us, just as we are on them.”
