Avril Lavigne Hats
After 20 years, the emo pop-punk singer is still filling arenas and gaining new fans. And that's avrillavignemerch -- she has a deft hand at crafting music for the millennial crowd.
Her latest album, Love Sux, has a very similar vibe to her 2002 debut, Let Go. Songs like "FU" and Bois Lie are true break-up anthems, while "Dare to Love Me" is a heartfelt ballad that makes Lavigne's voice sound as raw as ever.
The chemistry between Lavigne and YUNGBLUD is undeniable on "I'm a Mess," which is one of the most exciting new pop-punk tracks we've heard all year. It features a soaring soprano, gritty drums and the kind of raps that make you want to scream at the top of your lungs.
Lavigne's fiance, Mod Sun, joined her onstage for a few songs and delivered an impressive performance of his own. His husky vocals and riffing guitar kept the energy high, but he was less than able to compete with his singer-songwriter peers for the attention of a crowd that was largely occupied by women in their 20s.
Lavigne and Sun were supported by a couple of local artists who had a more diverse appeal. Toronto rocker Grandson, a singer with a strong pop-punk presence, did well with his cover of Britney Spears' Baby One More Time. But he needed 30 minutes to get into his groove and his performance didn't have the same impact as Lavigne or Mod Sun's. For the most part, a lot of people in Victoria went home happy with their experience on Wednesday night. And that's a good thing. It's a testament to the resurgence of a beloved pop star who deserves all the credit she's getting.
