Thoughts On Death From America's Greatest Orator

Most world cultures acknowledge an archetype that represents death. Whether it be the grim reaper or the boatman, the figure that represents death is usually an ominous and often scary entity. During one very difficult time in my life, I sought out the counsel of a wise man and discovered how embracing the concept of death can actually help you live your life more fully. I hope that by sharing this knowledge your life will be more meaningful. Here is what I learned.

Grieving is a process which has quite a clear and precise beginning but not such a clear ending. My grieving started when I received my husband's death certificate but when does the grieving end? There are some signs which might help to interpret the situation.


The song is about the death of Buddy Holly and has the famous line, "the day the music died." I enjoy listening to music. On occasion I compose an original song, or spoof silly lyrics to an existing melody. Music is a source of joy for me. However, there was a time when the music died in my life.

Each person deals with death in her own way. Some people are in denial. Some turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to cope. Some simply stay stuck in their grief. The key to the transition from the preoccupation of death to the fullness of life is to work through the feelings and through each stage.

For football fanatics, John Butler might ring a bell. He is the general manager of the famous San Diego Chargers. He died at the young age of 56 from lung cancer.

When organizing a funeral, you can neglect yourself, especially if you are a busy person at a busy time. Take the time to mourn yourself without embarrassment; and take time to share your grief with others.

A wrongful death claim is a claim brought against someone who may be liable for a death. For example, a drunk driver who crashes into and kills another driver may be held liable for that death in a wrongful death claim. In most cases, the suit is brought by a close family member or spouse. A wrongful death claim is usually filed to help a family with loss of income and to pay for funeral expenses, but can also be used to punish a party for gross negligence, etc.

I am not sure if the Nelson's were a part of my invention, or my reinvention. I think both, because I think back when trying to make a decision and remember some of the life lessons I learned back then watching Ozzie, Harriet David and Ricky Nelson on TV.
