Balloon in Stomach
In a procedure known as ballooning, a balloon is inserted into the stomach through the mouth. This procedure is usually done in an outpatient setting. The balloon is attached to a fine delivery catheter. A stylet is fed through this catheter to stiffen it and help the doctor push it as the patient swallows. The balloon is then inflated with a fixed amount of fluid.
Cases of balloon in stomach

Although most cases of balloon in stomach are temporary and require no special care, a few complications may occur. Symptoms include nausea and pain, which usually resolve within a few days. In a few cases, the balloon must be removed because the patient's body can't tolerate it.

After a few days, the patient may be discharged from the hospital. In such a case, the patient will be on a liquid meal plan containing protein shakes and soft foods. In two weeks, the patient may return to a normal diet. As a result of the weight loss , the patient's other health conditions may improve. Some patients can even experience improvements in sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver, and dyslipidemia (abnormal levels of fats in the blood).

After the procedure, patients usually receive an aftercare plan that includes diet and exercise. The placement of the balloon relies on the skills of an experienced endoscopist, but patients should also be accompanied by a multidisciplinary team that includes a gastroenterologist, a nutritionist, a psychologist, and a primary care physician.
Exclusion criteria

The first step in the treatment of a balloon in the stomach is to exclude any health conditions that may affect the stomach. This is done through diagnostic esophagogastroduodenoscopy. During the procedure, a MedSil balloon is inserted under sedation with propofol 2 mg/kg. Local anesthetic is used to make the throat and esophagus numb. The balloon is introduced into the stomach under endoscopic vision and is filled with 600-700 ml of saline or a 10-methylene blue solution. The patient is then taken to a recovery room for 2 hours and the balloon is removed at 6 months.

Patients with a history of Helicobacter pylori should be thoroughly evaluated for eradication before the balloon is inserted. The patient should undergo a repeat fecal antigen test before the first endoscopic approach. Patients with a history of hypertension should undergo a complete workup to exclude other conditions that could affect the balloon placement.
Procedures

Procedures for balloon in stomach can be performed through an outpatient procedure. The patient is usually given a mild sedative to relax before the procedure, and a thin, flexible tube is inserted into the patient's throat. The surgeon then places the balloon into the stomach and fills it with a sterile saline solution. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and the patient is usually transported home after the procedure.

Following the procedure, patients are usually able to return to work and normal activities within a week. Patients may experience some pain and soreness for a few days, but the discomfort is usually minimal and can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication. Some patients may experience a sensation of the balloon moving in the stomach. Patients may also need to take calcium supplements and multivitamins. The risks associated with gastric balloon procedures are minimal compared to other types of surgery.
Side effects

One of the side effects of a balloon in the stomach is bloating. This is normal because the stomach is designed to produce a feeling of fullness. However, if the bloating is bothersome or persistent, you should seek medical advice. Your physician can suggest some simple treatment options that will help you avoid or minimize the side effects of the balloon in your stomach. You should limit liquid intake during meals, eat slowly, and avoid hard nuts, seeds, or products that contain simple carbohydrates. You should also avoid foods that are difficult to digest or that increase your stomach's acid.

Another side effect of a balloon in the stomach is abdominal pain. Fortunately, this is not permanent. Antispasmodic medication can help you manage the pain. Antispasmodic medications can also reduce the frequency of vomiting. If you feel any of these side effects, call your doctor or clinic immediately. Typically, you can expect the side effects to last three to five days.
Weight loss

After balloon insertion, most people can resume their normal diet after two to three weeks. During this time, patients should chew their food well and eat four to five small meals daily. Some foods may stick to the balloon and cause heartburn or belching. To help prevent this, patients should drink water after every meal. This will also help the body to tolerate a wider variety of foods. Those who wish to maintain a lower body weight can meet with a dietitian every month to monitor progress and make any necessary changes.

The procedure involves the placement of a small, silicone gastric balloon in the stomach. This is a simple outpatient procedure that takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Once the balloon is in the stomach, the doctor removes it through a similar procedure. The patient is then given ongoing support after the procedure, usually for six months.
