Marketing Heath Ledger's Death
Another piece of my childhood died today. David Nelson died at the age of 74 from complications with Colon Cancer. The news on the internet today is that he died at home following a protracted illness. He was the last living member of a Television family that were a small part in making a lot of us who we are today. Let's have a show of hands. anyone older than 45 not know who the Nelson's were? Folks make sure to have a colo-rectal screening for cancer done this year and every year afterward. Colon cancer is the easiest to catch early and one of the most deadly forms of cancer. I would much rather check once a year, than have to deal with the results of what colon cancer can cause. Get checked!

People are unsure of what death really is. They believe no one knows what happens after death. Not understanding what comes after death scares them. Do we fade off into nothingness or do we live on in another form? They are unsure whether they did everything right to merit an afterlife. Which brings us to the next reason we fear death.

Don't try to deny how you feel about the person who died. Don't be afraid to think about them and about the good times you've shared together. If you have a creative streak, do something with it. Create something dedicated to them. A painting, a poem, a cross stitch work, anything artistic, do it and dedicate it to them.

Even when sharing personal memories and thoughts, it's a good idea to write them down rather than speaking "off the cuff." It's normal to be caught up in the emotion of a funeral, and easy to forget what you planned to say. Writing down those main points on note cards or paper will help you stay on track. Practicing your funeral speech will also help prevent stage fright. Stand in front of a mirror and practice relaxing, smiling and looking out over your audience. Remember, you aren't demonstrating your public speaking expertise; you're helping others remember the one who is gone.
My brother Dane is in the Philippines now visiting his wife's family. It was hard to get hold of him to tell him the news. He said he already knew it because he had a dream the night before that dad was in heaven surrounded by Mexican's who were thanking him for giving them that gospel tract. (Dad moved on from Cuban's to Mexicans when he and mom moved back to the old home place near Glenwood.) Dad still talked to anyone he met about the Gospel, but he couldn't talk to the increasing number of Mexicans , so he just gave them Gospel tracts. Dad also tried to learn Spanish, but that didn't turn out quite like he wanted it to. I don't think he ever even learned to say hello or goodbye.
Death glances back at the wide swath of ashes that marks her path through the forest. She raises her hands to the skies and shouts an incantation. A single tear glistens on her cheek before the lightning strikes. And then she's gone.
