James Whitfield Thomson
James Whitfield Thomson is a former sales executive and U.S. Navy navigator who served in the Vietnam War. A member of Andre Dubus's writers' workshop, Thomson now resides in Natick, Massachusetts. His work spans many genres, including science fiction, romance, historical fiction, and thrillers.

James Whitfield Thomson was an early member of Andre Dubus' writers workshop. He grew up in Pittsburgh and attended Harvard College on a scholarship. He later earned a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. Thomson also served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. His writing has been published in a variety of journals, including Agni. He has also received grants from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts.

His writing

After completing his degree, he taught for a year at the University of Miami, but soon fell out of love with academia. He then went to work for Equitrac Corp. and was their second employee. He retired thirteen years later. Thomson's writing includes a number of short stories.

James Whitfield Thomson is a former sales executive from Massachusetts who served in the U.S. Navy as a navigator during the Vietnam War. He was also a member of Andre Dubus's writers workshop, and now lives in Natick, Massachusetts. His debut novel, The Ledge, was one of the best-selling books of 2013.

He was a naval officer, having enlisted and non-commissioned officers. His shipmates included William H. Meredith and Richmond Doggett, Acting Second Assistants James H. Hunt and A. L. Mann, and Acting First Assistants Thomas A. Reynolds and John J. Moule. James Whitfieldthomson in the ship's crew included John R. Sherwood and George W. Adams.

Thomson served aboard the USS SS Franklin in the Pacific. He was a master's mate. Other crew members included C. F. Purrington and William W. Storms. He also served as a chief engineer. His assistants included William H. Best, R. E. Stall, and H. P. Gray. His third assistants included John T. Smith and M. B. Cushing.

Thomson's ship crew was composed of six officers. The Acting Master's Mate was John McManus, the Second Assistant Engineer was Francis M. Magers, and the flag lieutenant was F. J. Naile. The First Assistant Engineer, William Chandler, was a First Lieutenant and the Acting Third Assistant Engineer was John C. Parker. Lastly, a Volunteer Lieutenant was Thomas McElrath. He was later replaced by Lieutenant Commander Joseph H. Whitesides.
