How to Protect your Lost Merchandise
Online sales continue to grow and more merchandise will be returned. This complicates and increases the costs for retailers.

The holiday season is one the busiest periods of the year for returns. Gartner Research says that approximately 1 million items are returned every day to stores during the Christmas season. Only half of these items are resold, however.

Retailers are losing 10% of their holiday sales. This trend has been evident for many years.

If you have inventory that was damaged during shipping, then you might be eligible to file for a replacement or refund. First, determine whether the loss was accidental or not. Then calculate the total loss.

Add the number of units you lost to your inventory and multiply that by their price. You can then determine whether the loss was substantial relative to your sales. If you discover that the loss was significant relative to your sales, you may want to record it as an additional expense.

Storing Lost Merchandise in a safe place is a great way of keeping them in good order. This can be accomplished by placing the item in a safe or warehouse.

Make sure to label your containers and boxes so you can see which ones are missing. This is especially important for large items such cash and checks.

The United States Postal Service provides several loss-related services. To file a Domestic Claim, the USPS National Materials Customer Service Centre can be contacted if your package contains missing items. Once you've completed the form, send it with proof of value to the USPS. They will then process your request for a reimbursement or replacement.

USPS also offers insurance on damaged or lost items. The type of insurance you choose may require you to pay a fee in order to receive a refund, replacement, or both.

For perishable goods you can purchase shipment-specific insurance. This insurance policy can save you shipping fees and is a good option if your products have high retail values.

A better option is to check with your local Post Office if they offer insurance and shipping services. You can protect your goods from shipping damage by paying a fee at many post offices.
