The Sacred Heart Church
The Sacred Heart Church is a Catholic church in New Haven, Connecticut. It is known for its Catholic tradition and the services it offers. It was founded by an Italian priest and has been under the guidance of the Stigmatine Fathers since 1922. Currently, it performs baptisms and marriages.

It was founded by an Italian priest

The Sacred Heart Church was founded by an Italian priest, Father Raymond Dalla Porta. As a priest, he served the Italian community in downtown Cincinnati.

After a number of years, he was appointed as canon of the Cathedral. He was also a founder of the Secular Institute of Oblates of the Sacred Heart.

The church was located at 5th and Broadway in downtown Cincinnati. In 1922, it moved to Waltham. At the time, about 32,000 people lived in Waltham. It was a predominantly Protestant city.

When the new parish began to grow, the neighborhood around the church changed. A lot of Italian immigrants moved to the area. They lived in close proximity to each other. Some of them attended Mass on Sundays.

On one occasion, a peal of a bell sounded a scream of alarm. The people were angry. Fortunately, the pastor was alerted to the situation.

A few weeks later, a newly ordained priest named Benjamin Franch arrived. Despite his age, he was able to study special courses. He was ordained on April 5, 1924.

It was entrusted to the Stigmatine Fathers on November 6, 1922

A little over a century ago the Sacred Heart Church in Waltham, MA was a far cry from its current state. Located near the heart of the city, the parish had been in existence for just over two years. In that time, nearly 4,000 Italian immigrants had made their home in the Boston area. Cardinal O'Connell was looking for an Italian priest to help his flock and his quest took him to Waltham.

The Stigmatines were given the enviable task of caring for the spiritual needs of the Italian community in the Boston metro area. They soon became known for their charitable activities, which included donating the statue of St. Raphael in front of the cathedral. Other notable events of the era include the centennial of Sacred Heart, Monticello, as well as the ordination of the first class of permanent deacons in the archdiocese.

Interestingly, Waltham is also an active and modern industrial city. Many of the Italian immigrant workforce were employed by the Boston Manufacturing Company. However, the city also had a large Irish population. These people were in need of a proper Catholic church.

It performs baptisms and marriage services

It has been moved to Gates of Heaven cemetery

The Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church has moved its statue of Saint Patrick from its former location to Gates of Heaven cemetery in East Hanover, New Jersey. It is one of five Catholic cemeteries in the state. Several of the church's members have already been buried there.

Aside from the Sacred Heart, the Gates of Heaven cemetery also has two mausoleums dedicated to prominent New Yorkers. They are the Saint Francis of Assisi Chapel and Garden Mausoleum and the Our Lady Queen of Peace Mausoleum. These mausoleums are in the central chapel and garden area of the cemetery. Other individuals who have been buried at the cemetery include Sal Mineo, Billy Martin, Mrs. Harry Houdini, James Cagney and many other notable individuals.

The Sacred Heart church, along with other local Catholic institutions, was closed in the Vailsburg section of Newark in January 2006. Originally, the Archdiocese of Newark promised to close the parish in two years. After that announcement, the parish was closed in a matter of months.
