My neighbor checked into a hospital for intense abdominal pain. After being administered drugs, he thought he felt better and started to get up, wanting to go home. To the surprise of his attending physician, he suddenly collapsed and died from cardiac arrest.



Dad recovered to the point that he had ten more good years of life, except for the two times his head sprung a leak. He had a brain bleed. That is a bleeding blood vessel between the skull and the brain, but it is not in the brain. It presses the brain and gives symptoms of a stroke, but it is not a stroke. Once the bleeding is stopped, the brain returns to normal, and so does the patient. Anyway, neither the aneurysm not the brain bleeds were dad's illness. Although he should have died, he didn't. None of those were the illness of which dad would die.

Offers of help. While food is almost always appreciated (see above), sometimes other offers of assistance are needed. Maybe you can provide some hours of childcare, walk a dog, buy a carload of groceries or clean a house. The best thing to do is ask what is needed - then provide.

One to two weeks prior to death, disorientation becomes more evident. Sleeping is more prevalent. My mother spent an increased amount of time sleeping and became uncommunicative, unresponsive, and difficult to arouse at times. This is in part was due to changes in the metabolism of the body. Our loved one processes his or her life with the eyes closed which is the reason for the increase of sleep. The patient can hear what we say so no negativity is accepted. He or she is preparing for their death in a quiet environment.


Like individuals, funeral s can be very different from one another. Sometimes it is thought that the funeral should reflect the life of the person that has passed on. When this is the thought you sometimes have different funerals. If your loved one was a big Star Trek fan then you may find yourself attending a Star Trek themed funeral, for example.
