目前衛福部核准 外燴 的 13 種美白成分，主要功能分為「抑制黑色素形成」及「兼具抑制黑色素形成與促進已產生的黑色素淡化」兩大類，最常見的美白成分是維生素C衍生物，如：維他命 C 磷酸鎂鹽等，其作用是抑制黑色素的形成，並促進其代謝。 其中除「AscorbylTetraisopalmitate（脂溶性維他命 C）」使用濃度 3% 為「含藥化粧品」外，其餘 12 種成分則為一般化粧品得使用之成分。 平時在潔顏完畢後，可以選擇有添加維他命C、麩胱甘肽、蠶絲蛋白、白藜蘆醇等成分的保養品，不僅能為肌膚提供所需營養，也能修復受損膚質，幫助減緩老化速度，讓臉部透出自然好氣色。 番茄擁有大量的維他命C與茄紅素，能幫助抵禦體內的自由基，達到抗氧化的效果，進而減緩老化速度，還能減少黑色素生成，讓肌膚更明亮有光澤。
而物質基本上分成「透光」跟「不透光」兩種。 透光物質會讓某些色光通過，吸收其他色光。
