Season 4: A Guide to What We Do In The Shadows
Children's learning and development are enhanced by shadows. They can stimulate exploration at the light table and encourage deeper thinking. Building Blocks can be a great way for young children to learn about shadows and improve their problem-solving, social, and fine motor skills.

Mark Proksch's energy-vamp Colin Robinson struggled through the most mundane tasks of modern life in the first season. It was a funny and hilarious show about ancient vampires who live together in Staten Island's monster house.

After a brief break, he returned quickly to the projector and started to create shadows of his own. He realized quickly that moving an object or bringing the object closer to the sun would affect the shape and clarity its shadow. A series of activities was developed to help children understand how the shadow's size and clarity changes over time.

A Shadow Tracing Activity
After your child has built a tower from blocks, you can invite him to use a flashlight on butcher paper to trace the shadow of his shadow. This is an easy activity that will help your child improve his spatial skills as well as practice handwriting.

Use translucent materials like tissue and tin foil to create shadows that are different in color. You can also experiment with different combinations of light sources to change the color.
