The movie was made in two variations, filmed at the identical time and there are slight differences. Overall this could be a worthwhile buy should you enjoyed the film and its catchy music. Gene Nelson is a wonderfully easy going dancing cowpoke and his songs with Ado Annie have endless charm. Charlotte Greenwood is a marvel as Aunt Eller, all arms and legs and residential spun philosophy. Eddie Albert has certainly one of his finest roles as Ali Hakim. It's hard to imagine anybody being better in these roles. Theatrical variations -- The Todd-AO 70mm model and the CinemaScope 35mm model are completely completely different, with totally different opening credits, each scene being shot twice and with completely different sound mixes.

Also included are many extras, and scene by scene commentary, and lots more. Her songs had to be edited together from recordings made virtually literally observe by observe.


While many sequences are clearly shot on a sound stage, the beautiful outdoor pictures in Todd-AO provides a lot to the spectacle. When I saw the current tape of a British stage play of this, it had no where near the impression and this was one of many reasons. This set is a real must have for any fan of Hollywood musicals. Once in Todd-AO and again in normal cinemascope for these cinemas that weren't geared up for Todd-AO because Todd AO had 7 channel sound even again in the 1950's, and required a special screen. At the time of constructing the movie, to ensure one of the best presentation in cinemas that did not have the equipment to point out the 70mm Tod-Ao Version with its six channels of sound, a cinemascope version with the standard 4 channel sound was additionally made. I by no means realised how good the film itself was, and with this version being taken directly from the original in Todd-AO format in 70mm movie and at 30 frames a second, it offers a really clean flicker free image, and the colors are brilliant!

Other movies were filmed/recorded using this process - notably the Sound Of Music and South Pacific - but that is the best product of that system. Yes the soundtrack could have been re-mastered, however you probably can't create what wasn't there in the first place.
