Few people have mastered the knack of staying motivated. It almost appears transient to the majority. It comes and goes, frequently fading at the worst possible times when we need it the most, like waves grazing the coast.
Like many of you, I aspire to create a better future for those under my care as well as myself. As they say, the best way to foretell the future is to plan and design it yourself. Theoretically, everything seems straightforward until one is faced with an uphill battle.
I had to divide my time and effort between job, my family, and my personal life when I started my Master's programme in marketing at the University of London. The component of energy management—maintaining high levels of focus and productivity in the here and now—was what I found to be the most difficult to control.
The question then becomes, what sets those who succeed apart from others who barely scrape by? Being a varsity swimmer in high school, I had to learn that lesson the hard way. The grind starts during competitions when the starting signal is given and your body enters the chilly water. All appears good during the initial few laps, but you can feel tiredness starting to set in with each stroke and kick. Even loud audience cheers don't help much; all you can hear is yourself gasping for air and the splashing of the water. In the end, it's just you and your own mentality. Some swimmers take it more slowly in an effort to conserve energy for the duration of the race. I've only occasionally seen swimmers stop and give up. Some are able to push forward, propelled by an elusive quality that is particular to them. Several other aspects of life can be used as examples; whether it be monetary gain, a gold medal, position, fame, the pride they will bring to their country, family, or their own name, those who succeed in life used strong emotions supported by compelling visions to drive their actions.
The phrase "People who have a "why" can bear with practically any "how"" comes to mind.
In his book "Man's Quest for Meaning," Viktor Frankl penned those lines. All of us fight uphill fights. Frequently, we lose excitement, passion, drive, and purpose in the process of checking things off our to-do lists. Many people no longer take breaks to consider "What or who am I truly doing this for? What am I giving up right now in order to gain later?
When you want something as badly as you want to breathe, you'll succeed, as motivational speaker Eric Thomas is known for saying. The more you use your "why" as emotional fuel to motivate your activities, the more probable it is that you will overcome whatever challenges lie in your path.

Hence, if you are reluctant to do something—whether it be studying, working, or even exercising—take some time to visualise what or who you are doing this for as vividly as you can.
Even better, make a vision board, surround yourself with objects that serve as constant reminders of your objective, or turn on some uplifting music. I am aware that some people might be reluctant to take time out of their already packed schedules to do this. Yet, someone who dedicates five to ten minutes to visualisation in order to fuel two hours of diligent labour will likely outperform someone who starts working right away without any focus or drive. Effective action produces outcomes!
The trip, no matter how difficult, becomes more meaningful when you keep in mind why you started, and meaning motivates people to perform near superhuman feats. I'll close by wishing you success in all of your own endeavours.
