Avanos Medical (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has announced it will recall Cortrak*2's Enteral access system. Avanos Medical The recall was announced in response to injuries sustained by patients and deaths caused by misplaced nasoenteric/nasoga tubes. The recall includes 629 devices that are distributed throughout the United States.
Avanos markets the Cortrak*2 enteral access system for its ability to visualize the patient's small bowel and stomach, which helps in the placement of a medical feeding tube. Patients may suffer injuries to their vocal chords, lungs, or the trachea if the tube is not properly placed. Avanos Medical has reported that there have already been sixty-three injuries and 23 deaths caused by misplacement of nasogastric feeding tubes using CORTRAK*2's Ental Access System. Pulmonary failure, pneumothorax (collapsed lungs) perforation (a hole in the stomach or bowel wall) pneumonia, an excess of fluid between the lungs (the chest cavity as well as the lung tissue) have all been among the injuries.
Avanos Medical outlined a plan that will allow patients to be updated with labeling so that they are able to confirm the position of nasogastric, nasoenteric , and other tubes before they are utilized
Avanos was the second caution that was issued by the FDA in 2022 regarding the use of enteral nutrition tubes.
