Avanos Medical Recalls Cortrak*2 Ental Access System
Avanos Medical has recalled the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System due to accidents and deaths that result from misplacement of nasoenteric and nasogastric tube. The recall covers 629 devices that were sold in the United States.

However, patients could suffer damage to their vocal cords as well as lung if the tube is not correctly inserted. Avanos Medical recalls that there are 60 accidents, 23 deaths, and 23 illnesses resulting from the incorrect placement or accidental insertion of a nasogastric feeding tube using the CORTRAK*2 Entral Access System. There have been several injuries, such as respiratory failure, pneumothorax, collapsed lung perforation (a hole through the wall of your lungs or bowel), pneumonia and pleural effusion, which is the excess fluid that forms between your lungs and your chest cavity.

Avanos Medical outlined a plan which would permit patients to be updated with labeling so that they can verify the location of nasogastric, nasoenteric and other tubes before they are utilized

Avanos was the second warning issued by the FDA in 2022 regarding the use of enteral nutrition tubes. In February, the FDA issued a warning to healthcare professionals and parents regarding the danger of strangulation for children using feeding tubes. Two instances were reported of strangulation in children who received a feeding tube tied around their necks.
