Avanos Recalls FDA Class II After 23 Deaths Involved with the Device
The Avanos MedicalCortrak*2 enteral access system was designed to allow health professionals to insert medical feed tubes into the stomach or small intestine of patients that require nutrition. There have been numerous incidents of death and injuries in patients who have lost their nasogastric tube.

This recall is being used for updates to the labeling of the device and instructions to use. The update instructs users to ensure that the tube was set up according to the institution's guidelines prior to making use of the tube for food delivery.

Avanos Medical Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos Medical has issued a recall notification stating that, since 2015, there were 60 deaths of patients and 23 injuries caused by misplacement nasogastric feeding tube. Avanos Medical feeding tube The adverse events identified included respiratory failure, pneumothorax or collapsed lung, perforation (a opening in the esophagus's wall or lung) and pneumonia (a lung infection), pleural effusion, excess fluid in the lungs, and the chest cavity, and pneumothorax.

Avanos Medical issued on March 21, 2022 a field correction notice to customers who were using the devices between January 20,21 and January 20,22. The notice provided the following information:

Check the positioning of the Nasogastric tubes as well as nasoenteric tubes in accordance with the institution's policies.
Attach the field correction notice about the issue to the operator's guide.
