Kings of Leon Canvas
It's been over 12 years since New Zealand had a full-blown rock show. But Kings of Leon were in town last night, and they didn't disappoint.
A crowd of 10,000 fans screamed their hearts out at Spark Arena on Friday evening, and it was quite the sight to behold. While some moshers flung beer cups around, others drank in the excitement of seeing their favourite band perform again.
The Nashville four-piece took the stage in front of a sold out crowd, and they wasted no time getting started. It didn't take long for them to deliver their biggest hit to date - Sex on Fire - a soaring anthem that proved their chops as a band. They followed that with a trio of more memorable tunes - Notion, On Call and Use Somebody - to round out their performance.
They also saved the best for last - a medley of dance-friendly Manhatten and rowdy versions of Charmer and Black Thumbnail. That's not to mention their big singalong number, Bucket, which topped off an epic set list that spanned 20 years of rock history.
Their latest album, When You See Yourself, is a good place to start. It's surprisingly light on its toes, and briefly teases what a winning Kings of Leon record could sound like in 2021.
kingsofleonmerch on the record - the aforementioned Sex on Fire, Fairytale and 'A Wave' - are some of the most uplifting Kings of Leon tracks to grace an album in a while. And the album as a whole is an enjoyable listen from start to finish, thanks in no small part to the impressive recording quality of its lead single, 'Closer'.
