While this is a minor feature, it does help to make Mario more memorable to the player. Having a more detailed face is a good idea in any platformer, but it’s especially useful in these 3D games where it’s easy to forget the specifics of a character’s features.

It’s a shame that Nintendo didn’t put more effort into this compilation. They could have given it an eloquent re-release that would have truly celebrated the Super Mario franchise’s 35th anniversary.

There are few games that have left their mark on the world of video gaming as much as Super Mario. It’s a series that can hold its own among the best that have ever been created, and it has always had an uncanny ability to make players feel as if they are living out a dream.

It’s a rare feeling for any game to be able to deliver on that promise. But the Super Mario Sunshine that came out on the Nintendo GameCube in 2001 did just that, and while its awe-inspiring graphics and memorable soundtrack will always remain its biggest draw, it also comes with some serious flaws.

Despite its shortcomings, there’s no doubt that the Super Mario Sunshine is one of the most iconic Mario games of all time, and it helped set a solid foundation for Mario future games to follow in its footsteps. The evocative tropical island setting of Isle Delfino, the recurring theme of environmental sustainability and the game’s unique water-based gameplay all contribute to its legacy.

Each level in Sunshine is a miniature world, complete with distinct landmarks and locals to interact with. This sets it apart from most Mario games that tend to focus more on level design than plot or worldbuilding.

For the most part, these levels are designed in a way that lets you progress through them multiple times, each with a different set of objectives. For example, the first time you visit a stage, you may only be looking for red coins, but on your next trip through it, you’ll need to find the location of a secret course or defeat a boss.
