After seven years' of failures with Avanos Medical's Enteral Feeding Tube Placement Systems Avanos Medical's Enteral Feeding Tube Placement System has failed for FDA has assigned the most serious category for recalls.
Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System features an electromagnetic stylet with an external receiver, a monitor for display as well as an electronic receiver. It provides a continuous feed of medical tubes being inserted in patients' stomachs or small bowels. Cortrak 2 eternal access system This permits the improvement of tip placement accuracy as well as the elimination of any complications.
In spite of that goal, the system has been implicated in dozens of patient injuries, leading Avanos to launch an recall in January of all Cortrak*2 units used between January 2021 and January 2022--totaling more than 630 devices that were distributed between April 2016 and the start of this year.
The incident involving safety isn't recall in the strict sense. Avanos doesn’t ask healthcare providers send the devices back at the factory. Avanos wants them to utilize the devices properly.
Avanos Medical A tube for feeding that has not been properly inserted could cause grave injury or even death. According to FDA, Avanos received reports of 23 deaths and 60 injuries, as of 2015, all related to the FDA's use of the Cortrak*2 system to guide the placement of the feeding tube.
Many different injuries have been reported , including respiratory failure (collapsed lung), lung infection, pleural effusion, gaps in the walls, the esophagus and the bowel.
Avanos Medical feeding tube According to FDA, in its March 21 Field Correction Notice the Georgia-based business advised users to "confirm the use of Nasogastric (and nasoenteric) tubes in accordance with the institution's policy." Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos asked users to add the safety announcement to the operating manual for the system and verify with Avanos that the change was approved.
Avanos announced that they will soon issue new labeling on the device. It will include the instructions for placing tubes according to their policies.
Avanos Medical feeding tube The FDA has issued a second warning this year regarding enteral feeding tubes. The FDA published a safety announcement in February that warned healthcare professionals and parents about the potential for strangulation of children who feed tubes.
The warning came following two reports of deaths in 2021. Each of the cases was a result of a tubing system that was accidentally placed around the neck of a newborn less than 2 years old, while the patient wasn't being monitored by staff at the hospital.
"While the FDA believes that strangulation due to tube feeding into the enteral system in children is rare," the agency noted in the notice. It suggested that other similar incidents may not have been reported to the FDA.
