Men

Men is the latest film from Alex Garland, who has proven himself to be a skilled writer of highly allegorical scifi fables. These fables are captivating with their stunning visuals. Ex Machina and Annihilation were his previous feature films that were wildly successful. But with Men, Garland is taking a huge swing at genre sleight in an effort to explore the depths of gender relations and human psychology.

Men is a horror unlike any other. It features a full-frontal male nudity as well as a complex narrative about grief and toxic masculinity. It is a film that has its most intense moments when Rory Kinnear and Jessie Buckley play multiple shades of masculine toxicity throughout the film.

Buckley, like Harper, is independent and strong-willed, but she does not hide the fact she has experienced emotional trauma. Buckley's PTSD manifests as a fear of men that she then translates into physical terror.


Harper is constantly hounded by men as she explores an English country estate. The men she is stalked by range from bratty children to lecherous vicars. They all emotional terrorize Harper in subtle ways before turning into frightening and often surreal attacks.
