During the evaluation process, you will have to conduct mock classes with our staff. Although the advice we will provide here is for said mock classes, it should be followed throughout your time working with us and for all your classes.
Make sure you call your student on time: Punctuality is very important for both us and our students. Be mindful when you call them and to also end the class in a timely manner. To start the call, simply click on the Lesson Page link provided.
Greet your student: Just as with any other interaction, make it flow naturally. Greet your student, introduce yourself and ask them to introduce themselves (if it's your first time meeting each other). Make sure they are ready to start the class with you. Always remember that a friendly attitude can make the class a more enjoyable experience for both you and the student.
Always coordinate with your student: Sometimes, students will be outspoken and ask for a certain material/topic to be used during class, but sometimes they will leave it up to you to decide. Remember to always ask your student on how they wish to proceed with the class: what kind of class do they want to have, what topic they wish to discuss etc. Should the student be unsure on how to proceed, feel free to make some recommendations related to their interests and English level.
Adjust to the student’s comprehension level: Speak slowly and clearly and adjust your speaking speed if needed. Rephrase and simplify words/sentences when the student does not understand.
Give effective explanations: Occasionally check to see if your student has any questions. If they ask for explanations on some words/idioms, feel free to provide them with brief and clear explanations. You can consult an online resource in case you’re not sure about the meaning of certain words, however, do not copy-paste online definitions. Explain the word using your own words and make sure the phrasing is simple.
Use the chat box effectively. Type down the words/sentences the student asks you about, and type corrections as well. Feel free to send links to pictures or supplementary materials. If you use the chat box effectively, it will be easier for the student to understand the class.
Correct your student’s mistakes. Make sure not to over-correct or to correct students by using inadequate, harsh phrasing. Use a positive tone of voice and positive phrasing, and let them know it’s fine to make mistakes. If the student is comfortable with you, they will not be shy to talk, even if that means they will make mistakes, so make sure to maintain a friendly attitude throughout the lesson.
Establish rapport and be a good conversationalist. Smile, be upbeat and friendly. Students who have fun with their tutors usually book their classes over and over again. Make sure to let (or make) the student talk, as this might be their only chance to speak English.
Be polite to your students. Apologize if you are late, even if it’s not your fault (e.g call issues/connection problem). Do not interrupt the students and listen to them carefully. Try being professional at all times.
End the class naturally: When the lesson time has passed, let your student know. Leave a good impression by saying a few parting words, a goodbye and not abruptly ending the call.
