It has been said that death can undo and destroy the meaning of life. I am here, now, to dispute that claim. I say that death can destroy the meaning of life, which is to be happy, only if you let it.

It is all speculation as to how and what the realm beyond death is like.There are no verifiable evidence of a dead person coming back to this life to share a glimpse, if that, of what life is after death. Contact with those who passed on are all based on personal experience, some are conducted at seance, where a medium claims the uncanny ability to make contact with those who are supposedly in the other realm.

But death is still with us - death and the fear of death overshadow life. And we know that our loved ones are not coming back to us here and now. No more Nains. The point of Jesus' whole life, death and resurrection, is that He has gone before us. This world, beautiful and vital as it is, is not the end of the story. The kingdom and immortality await, and the big deal is this: it's not that our loved ones come back here to us, but rather that we, in our turn, will one day, sooner or later, go to meet them, and the Lord, to be reunited in heaven. That reunion will be the true healing and the beginning of the fulness of life. Death is for us, not the full stop, but the hyphen - leading us to the eternal kingdom.


Some writers refer to a realm, the borderland, found at the outer edge of the mental realms, where all the material aspect of life is manifest in its purest state. It is believed that the soul who gets here in this realm is definitely aware of a change, or awakening. Senses are sharper and more sensitive. The soul/spirit finds its true being. In this realm, one feels like one just emerged from a hazy daze. The surroundings are familiar- places, faces of people you've known who passed on before you, some unknown souls who may have shared some connection on earth.

Have you ever come to a red light and didn't want to stop? You could see the side streets were empty, so you knew it was "safe" to run the red light-i.e., you weren't going to hit another car. Did you stop anyway? If so, why? Or maybe you didn't stop, because you didn't see any police cars and figured your chances of getting caught were virtually nil. No police cars equated to no deterrent.

That it isn't the enemy it's caricatured to be? That it's all an illusion? That it's only the ego in you that has trouble living, aging, or dying? That the real you has no difficulty with any of these because the real you is eternal? Virtually every spiritual tradition teaches that the opposite of birth is death, not life. Life has no opposite. Life is eternal, which means you, the real you, is eternal, too.

Choose to believe it's a new life. You will always love the deceased. Talk to and keep him/her alive in your heart, family celebrations, anniversaries, and memorials. But start your new life, continue to grow and love. Trust grief and let it take its course, and reinvest your emotional energy into your new life.
