Sumerian Clothing
Sumerians developed their skills in clothing design during the third century BCE. The Sumerians' textiles can still be seen on pottery, sculptures, or tablets.

Long skirts were common in the civilization. They were usually made of soft flax.
Men's clothing

Ancient Sumer was cold and the clothes of women and men were simple. The most basic materials for clothing were sheep's wool and crop crops such as flax. These fabrics were woven together into long skirts or loincloths to cover their upper bodies, from their lower leg to their shoulders.

Long tunics reached their knees were one of the most important garments for men and women. These were decorated with allover patterns and borders, most often with embroidery or printing.

There were other types of dresses. These were often worn by priests or kings.

Kaunakes were often patterned, sometimes with asymmetrical forms. The lower half of the hemline was fringed with fringes. The fabric was a blend of wool tufts and wool, which were held together with large pins.

Later, men wore long fur or wool kilts with horizontally arranged patterns. These kilts were typically tied at the waist, and wrapped around the body to cover lower parts of the torso.

The tunic was then draped on a narrow shawl, either of flax tufts or twisted wool. These shawls were typically fringed or tied and were secured by wide belts.

Sumerian merch could also be worn in colder or hotter weather. They were made with soft, flowing materials like flax for hot weather; they were made with thicker material like wool or wool yarns for colder conditions.

Both sexes wore hair that was braided, twisted or pinned in updos around this time. Some of the most powerful male figures had their heads shaved.

Some of the less well-off wore shirts. Because their hats weren't enough to cover their heads and the shirt wouldn’t have fitted, they had no choice but to wear something else for the day.

Many men wore a belted hem with a fleece hem. Other men wore a tasselled knot at their rear. While others wore a long, tufted shawl they wrapped around the waist. These shawls were frequently worn in winter when long skirts or dresses were too cold.

The wealthiest were known to wear extravagant clothes, with rich jewels and designs. They often wore earrings, necklaces or hair ornaments.

These outfits were often decorated with fringes, tassels, and fringes. These clothes were worn to entertain, and also to show off one's status.

The clothing worn by both sexes was quite different to what was used in other locations in ancient Mesopotamia. You can see this in large relief sculptures.
