One of the most poignant stories in the Christian Gospels is the incredible story of the Widow of Nain (Luke 7: 11-17). This poor woman, who Jesus encountered as she accompanied her only son's coffin on its short journey to the graveside, is perhaps the most vivid image of total disaster we have in the Bible. She had suffered the most awful misfortune a Jew could possibly imagine, and the Gospel tells how the townspeople were with her, offering sympathy and support, and probably quietly thankful that it was her and not them.

Jesus said something even more shocking earlier in this passage. He clearly proclaimed his divine nature to them. "If you knew me you would know my Father." (John 8:19) Jesus had made very plain to them that he and his Father were in perfect agreement as to what his purpose was when he took on humanity and came into this world. "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him". (John 3:17) His enemies were shocked that Jesus would claim to be God, they were astonished that he claimed power to bring salvation to their souls. This was a day for them to remember because they had never heard any man utter such outrageous things.

Also, judge your environment. How much LIFE and how much death do you have in your surroundings? How many items in your house promote LIFE and how many are of death? Is there a gun or illegal possessions in your home? What themes are the most prominent in the music you listen to? How about your close friends? How many death habits do they have? How about your job? Are the people you frequently associate with completely consumed by LIFE or DEATH?

When a person dies, someone unique and irreplaceable is lost from us. If it's someone very close, a loved one, then the pain of loss can be excruciating, and many people never ever recover from that loss. We grieve for the deceased, but we also grieve for ourselves. The stronger the bond of love, the deeper the pain. Some people even resolve never to let themselves love as much ever again, for fear they will be hurt as badly again. The passage of time may lessen the rawness of this pain but it can never come anywhere near a complete healing. This is simply because we cannot replace the unique and the irreplaceable. The only way to heal the wound caused by the death of a loved one would be for us to be reunited with that loved one.


Followers of Islam try to help the dying as much as they can. They believe in making the death transition as easy as possible. They will surround the dying and try to support and comfort them in their final days. Upon the actual passing the eyelids are to be closed and the body covered. They then wash and wrap the body. The wrapped body is given a prayer and then buried. They do not believe in having markings of where the body is placed. They will allow a single stone, but no writing.


Since we don't know whether our own demise will be lengthy or sudden, let's think about the peace that we want our loved ones to be left with. Let us love more each day. Let us pay it forward at every opportunity. Let us take more time for family and friends. Let us see more positive than negative in people and in situations. Let us put down the cell phone for a moment to appreciate what we see and hear. Death is inevitable, but the peace we leave is eternal.
