Martin Hannett produced the first album, which was released in 1979. Hannett used many unconventional recording techniques to create the album. It was Curtis’s first studio album, and it was an important milestone in the history of post-punk.

Joy Division shirt and style would change over time but their approach and style remained the same. They would go on to be one of the most influential rock bands of all time, and helped create a new style of music known as post-punk.

They are also known for their live performances, and the use of drum machines and synthesizers to create their songs. Their music would continue to be influential on many artists through the years, as New Order was formed.

Peter Saville (English art director and graphic designer) designed the design. His design was based on radio emissions from a rotating neutronstar or pulsar. This image, which was transformed into flat lines to represent the silence of a dying planet, has been copied millions of times since it was released in 1979. Saville retained his original design, but added the text "No Music on a Dead Plant" underneath the waveform design.
