Fix The Ring Of Death

Humans have been killing each other for any number of reasons for as long as we have lived on the earth. Sometimes it is out of necessity and other times it is a custom or ritual. As we evolved over time we did away with certain forms of killing while others took their place. Since killing has been with us all this time, than it is not the act of killing that matters. What matters is whether or not we, as a society, find the circumstances in which we kill people acceptable.



Jesus said something even more shocking earlier in this passage. He clearly proclaimed his divine nature to them. "If you knew me you would know my Father." (John 8:19) Jesus had made very plain to them that he and his Father were in perfect agreement as to what his purpose was when he took on humanity and came into this world. "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him". (John 3:17) His enemies were shocked that Jesus would claim to be God, they were astonished that he claimed power to bring salvation to their souls. This was a day for them to remember because they had never heard any man utter such outrageous things.


So what can you do with the wisdom of the ages? The first step is to realize that your beliefs affect everything you do. Yes, everything. What you believe about death, an afterlife, your loved one, and your ability to deal with his/her loss drives your grief work. Then decide where you want to go in your new life. Do you want to always be loss oriented or restoration oriented?

In the song "Fields of Grace" Darrel Evans sings, "There's a place where religion finally dies." The word "religion" means "to bind." In its proper sense it can mean to bind us to God; in a negative sense it means to leave people feeling bound to impossible rules, demands and guilt, something Jesus never taught.

At least I know I'm not a lone. For even the greatest saints of the Bible expressed fear of death. Job was called the most righteous man on Earth, Hezekiah was listed as one of the most faithful kings of Judah, David was called a man after God's own heart. Yet even though Job was in agony he still didn't wouldn't just die despite his wife suggesting he do so. Job 2:8. Consider the story in 2 Kings 20: 1-10. Hezekiah is told by a prophet that he will die soon and Hezekiah becomes horrified. He begs for and gets another fifteen years of life. David writes lots of Psalms where he begs God to preserve his life.

Till death do us part, but how untrue that notion is. Death is never far from us all. Does death mean to lay motionless and that our body ceases to regenerate itself; or does death mean something more abstract and recent? If we examine death more closely, we would realize that death happens within us in every frame of our existence. Even as we breathe, the last breath dies as we inhale the next. While we breathe, our thoughts fade in and fade out, interweaving with life and death at every moment. In physical death, the consciousness lives on, born into another form, yet never all that far from the one which we just left.
