Hoodie
The hoodie, a classic garment that has been worn across many cultures in history, has played an important part in the creation and maintenance of social meanings. It's been used as a place of resistance and criminalization.
Monks used hooded clothes to signify their devotion to God and spirituality in the beginning. It was a popular practice for women to wear hooded coveralls in public spaces, starting in the 19th Century.
Trayvon Martin was dressed in a hooded hoodie, when George Zimmerman approached and shot him to death on February 26, 2012 (Sanford Police Department. Eliott & Reid. 2019). He was profiled and then shot to his death. Spite merch played an essential role in this tragic story.
Martin's supporters reconfigured the hoodie after the murder to resist racial profiling, injustice, and other forms of racism. Through this re-conceptualization, we can see that Martin maintained his innocence through his continued dissent against the state and the power structures of white supremacy.
This post seeks to explore the hoodie and its role in criminalization and resistance from an intersectional perspective. The history and use of the Hoodie will be explored. Finally, we will redefine the hoodie's role as an active object for resistance and a tool to self-determination.
