Frost Fan
The frost fan is a propeller fitted to ships designed to travel in polar waters. As ice builds up around the wings and creates a barrier, the force of the water creates pressures that can damage the ship. Frost blades have hollow blades that allow excess water to flow away, thus preventing ice build-up. Frost Propellers use a unique design that creates significantly less noise, friction and thrust loss when cruising than traditional rigid aluminum propellers. The frost fan is a propeller that can operate in freezing conditions. It has a wing or wings with a special structure to protect it from ice and has a long horizontal shaft. Frost thrusters are often used in icebreakers and other vessels intended for use on frost-covered lakes and seas, such as river ice patrol boats and ice class tankers. Frost blades are used to control unbound ice and debris on the surface of power lines during frost conditions. By preventing this material from spilling or falling from the wire, they eliminate the possibility of the line collapsing due to ice.
Frost Fan is a new wind turbine concept that addresses two main challenges for wind turbines: power densities and thermal growth. Wind Machine -blade technology combining an internal hub and an external rotor. Just before reaching tip speed, the three wings wrap around the core and unfold as the tip exits the barrier layer. Frosty Fan has never been simulated before and little is known about its structural performance. This thesis presents the validation of simulations by experiments on a 50 meter scale prototype. Initial experiments at laboratory scale successfully validated our numerical models and confirmed the feasibility of this concept.
