The History of the Nirvana Sweatshirt

The grunge era is considered by many to be as a significant moment in the history of rock. It altered the way people view music. The grunge era brought an entirely new rock style that wasn't built on hairspray or leather pants, but rather an organic form of punk that was inspired by Seattle's grunge scene. One of the first pioneers of this shift was Nirvana (Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic), Dave Grohl.

The logo and slogan of the band have become iconic in the world of rock. Some of their earlier tour t-shirts are still sought-after and sell for high prices. What's the story behind these t-shirts and how did they create such an impact on fashion's world?

Let's begin by introducing the Nirvana logo. The logo is simple, with a smiley face and eyes with Xs and a the squiggly mouth. It was a classic from its day. The design was created to promote the Nevermind album's release party in 1991. While it is commonly believed that Cobain was the one who created it during Nevermind's production, some claim that it was created by Lisa Orth, Sub Pop's first art director.

While it's a basic style however, it was a simple design, the Onyx font has evolved into the brand's visual identity for Nirvana. The font is featured in their most merchandise, as well as for their names. Onyx is the font they use for their name. Onyx font was picked randomly to be the group's initial name. It's been used since.

While its meaning isn't clear however, it is believed to be a symbol of "nirvana" which is an experience of transcendence and happiness. The concept gained popularity in the 90s, and it became the symbol of Nirvana and the counter-culture movement.

In the last few years, there are a number of legal battles regarding the smiley faces. Marc Jacobs launched his collection featuring the Onyx logo in the year 2018 and a smiley-face design that has striking resemblances to Nirvana's Nirvana Smiley. The Nirvana estate has brought a suit against Jacobs in the hope of proving that Jacobs' collection violates their copyright.

At first, the Nirvana Smiley was a tongue-in joke on the acid-house smiley. It gained popularity in the US during the latter half of the 1980s and early 1990s. While it was a popular design in the acid house genre, it wasn't a recognizable symbol until the Nirvana era.

The most fascinating aspect of the Smiley is the fact that it hasn't always been acknowledged by Cobain. Others claim that it was created within their own art department. While it might seem like a minor thing however the fact that it's been uncredited throughout their history is what is a major element of their legacy.
