多數寶寶在長牙的時候，長牙處會有红、腫、熱、痛的局部反應，此外長牙時牙床容易感到不舒服，有些幼兒甚至會有輕微發燒、腹瀉或是牙床有血腫，每個寶寶出現的症状不同，有的小孩在長牙時甚至不會有感覺。 術後需間隔 2 小時才可進食，可先飲用少量溫開水後無不適，才可喝飲料， 爾後無不適再進行清淡食物，待進食穩定後給予正常飲食。
含氟牙膏可保護 外燴 不受酸性侵襲，並堅固牙齒，修補被酸侵襲的牙釉質，减弱產酸细菌的活躍。 治療結束返家後請勿安排戶外行程，並維護口腔清潔，若出現口腔突然出血，呼吸困難及嘔吐不適情形，請立即告知醫護人員，口腔內傷口疼痛可服用止痛藥改善。

乳牙絕對不是撐過換牙即可，乳牙具有絕對重要的地位，影響成人牙齒的排列與口腔健康，更與小朋友生理與心理健康息息相關，不要被過往覺得乳牙不重要，等恆牙再照顧的觀念給誤導。 在牙科治療，舒眠麻醉的強度即可進行治療，患者能自主呼吸且副作用小，治療過程中無不適感，非常適合行為無法配合的小朋友，一次將問題全部解決。 目前健保提供未滿六歲孩童每半年免費塗氟一次，氟化物的使用被證實對乳牙有顯著的抗蛀牙能力。 對於蛀牙率較高的孩童，建議可以三個月自費塗氟，花少少的錢可以換來牙齒的健康。
小朋友哭鬧若用約束方式來進行治療，速度雖快，但很有可能造成小朋友看牙陰影，甚至可能會影響到成年時期。 恆牙是第二副牙齒，最先萌發的是在六歲時的第一大臼齒，大約在十二歲時萌發第二大臼齒，因此六歲到十二歲是孩子的換牙階段。
但是乳牙對於孩子咀嚼、發音、維持恆牙萌生空間皆有其必要性。 若乳牙太早因蛀牙而被拔除，會影響到恆牙的發展空間，可能會造成恆牙歪斜、錯位，使得牙齒排列不整齊。 因此寶寶牙齒保養必須從乳牙做起，切勿認為乳牙不重要而輕忽清潔的工作。 本院口腔醫學部自1988年起即設有兒童牙科，為目前台南地區少數具有專業兒童牙科分科的醫院，也是中華民國兒童牙科醫學會在雲嘉南地區唯一的專科訓練機構。 主要診治對象為15歲以下包含嬰幼兒、兒童及青少年。
